D-2 Student Visa Korea: Which Documents Need Certified Translation

Why D-2 Applications Need Translated Documents#

The D-2 visa is Korea's primary visa for degree-seeking international students. Most of the paperwork your university and the immigration office ask for — high school or prior-degree diplomas, academic transcripts, criminal background checks, bank statements for proof of funds — was issued in your home country, in your home language. Korean immigration and most universities require these submitted with a translation attached, not the original language alone.

Skipping or mishandling this step is one of the more common, avoidable reasons a D-2 application stalls.

Documents That Typically Need Translation#

  • Highest diploma/degree certificate — high school diploma for undergraduate applicants, bachelor's degree for graduate applicants
  • Academic transcript — full transcript of records from your most recent school
  • Criminal background check — required by most Korean universities for D-2 issuance, especially for direct enrollment rather than exchange programs
  • Bank statement / proof of funds — showing sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses
  • Birth certificate or family register — occasionally requested for identity verification, or if applying through a family-sponsorship route

Some universities issue their own admission and enrollment documents in English already — those typically don't need re-translation. But anything issued by a foreign government or foreign institution in a non-Korean, non-English language should be treated as needing translation by default.

What "Certified Translation" Means in Korea#

Korea doesn't have a government-licensed "sworn translator" system the way some countries do. What immigration officers and university admissions offices look for instead is a translator's certification statement — a signed declaration that the translation is a complete and accurate rendering of the original — attached to a professional, consistent translation. See what a properly certified translation package looks like.

Three Rejection Reasons We See Most Often#

  1. Name spelling inconsistency. Your name must be spelled identically across your passport, application form, and every translated document. A translator who doesn't cross-check against your passport can introduce a mismatch that flags the whole application.
  2. Partial translation. Submitting only the "important" pages and skipping stamps, seals, or registrar notes is a common shortcut that backfires — immigration officers expect the complete document, translated in full.
  3. No certification statement. A plain translation without a signed certification of completeness and accuracy is often not accepted as a stand-alone submission.

If You're Applying Through a Family-Sponsorship Route#

Some D-2 applications (or related family visas alongside a partner's studies) also require family register translation or apostille-linked document translation if your home country requires apostille authentication before documents are accepted abroad.

Turnaround Time#

If your enrollment deadline is close, same-day certified translation is available for complete, legible source documents — priority turnaround doesn't skip the required consistency and certification checks.

This article is for informational purposes only. D-2 document requirements vary by university and by individual case — confirm the exact list with your admissions office or HiKorea before submitting.
