Changing Visa Status Inside Korea: When You Need Document Translation

Why Status Changes Trigger New Translation Needs#

Changing your visa status inside Korea — for example from a student (D-2) visa to a work visa, or from a work visa to a marriage-based (F-6) visa — means immigration evaluates you against a different set of requirements than your original visa. That usually means submitting documents you didn't need the first time around, and if those documents were issued abroad, they need certified translation before the district immigration office will accept them.

Documents Commonly Requested for a Status Change#

  • Employment contract or offer letter — for a change into a work-based status
  • Degree certificate — many work visas require a degree matching the job's requirements
  • Marriage certificate — for a change into F-6
  • Criminal background check — frequently re-requested for a new status even if one was submitted for your original visa
  • Bank statement — if the new status has its own financial requirements

Reusing an Old Translation Is Usually a Mistake#

If you already had a document translated for your original visa, it's tempting to resubmit it for the status change. Two things commonly go wrong: the document may no longer be the current version (a new employment contract, an updated bank statement), and the certification wording immigration expects can differ slightly depending on which status you're applying for. Each status-change application gets treated as its own translation package rather than reusing an old one as-is — certified translation done for the current application avoids a mismatch between what's on file and what you're now submitting.

Timing Matters More Than for a First-Time Application#

Status changes are usually filed against your current visa's expiration date, which means there's less flexibility to redo a rejected translation and resubmit. Same-day certified translation exists specifically for this kind of tight-deadline resubmission, without skipping the certification and consistency checks that prevent a second rejection.

This article is for informational purposes only. Status-change requirements depend heavily on your specific visa transition — confirm the exact document list with your local immigration office before filing.
