What Is Status Change (체류자격변경허가)?
Definition
A status change (체류자격변경허가) is the formal application to switch a foreigner's visa type while remaining in South Korea — for example, from a student (D-2) visa to a work (E-7) visa — without leaving the country.
Korean immigration law requires that any change from one visa category to another go through a formal status-change application at the immigration office, supported by documents proving eligibility for the new category — an employment contract and degree verification for a student-to-work change, for instance, or a marriage certificate for a change to an F-6 spouse visa. Applying late, applying with an expired current visa, or missing a required supporting document (apostilled degree, criminal background check, employer's business registration) is the most common reason applications are returned or delayed. Processing generally runs several weeks, and working or studying past the current visa's authorization while the change is pending without proper permission can jeopardize the application.
Why it matters
A status change filed incorrectly, or with a gap between the old visa's expiration and the new one's approval, can put someone out of legal status in Korea without them realizing it.
